last stop

last stop

trying to get out of a rut, back in jan 2012, i started shooting photos around the city at night on long treks
something i hadn’t done before, not knowing which direction to walk and/or how to start i decided to just follow the train lines
just incase i got lazy and wanted to get home easy
there wasn’t any rhyme or reason at first but in the end, my streamlined plan was:
– go as far from home as the train lines stretched
– walk back home via station to station provided the landscape and locals permitted
the goal was to go places i hadn’t during hours i probably wouldn’t, in hopes to spark some sort of motivation
after a week or so of mostly being pushed to shoot, it turned into a project
first shooting whatever stations happened to be within arms reach
toward the end of it i’d routinely be walking from the top of the lines in the bronx to midtown or from the upper east to jamaica.
by nov. 2013 i’d walked to every mta subway station and photographed the entrance
there were 468 stations at the time (the Staten Island Railway is kind of its own entity)
and even though most station entrances aren’t too different from each other
walking from stop to stop really shows the diversity of the city
and helped get me motivated to shoot again
at least for this project
